Written by Taylor McManus, 04/17/2018
Whether you’re a poet or not, already a fan of the Seattle’s poetry scene or completely unaware of the literary richness of your city, the Poetry Slam this Thursday, April 19th will provide a night full of entertainment and new awareness. The Poetry Slam, coordinated by the College Activity Board, will be at the Erikson Theatre Off Broadway at 6 p.m.
The evening features several well-known young poets from Seattle, including 2015-2016 Youth Poet Laureate Leija Farr. Farr’s performance of “For Black Boys” for REEDality Radio exemplifies her talent for facing the complexities of race with elegant language.
Other poets include Tyson Amir and Azura Tyabji, who was recently honored as the Poet in Residence at The Seattle Review of Books for February. Dex Amora and Rell Be Free, both of whom are hiphop artists with impressive gifts for verse, will be performing as well.
Besides inviting successful artists to the stage the Poetry Slam will also provide an exciting opportunity for Seattle Central student poets to perform their work, allowing you to see new poets emerge onto the scene.
